Soren's Birthday Party

Let me just say this: Pinterest is awesome.  I get so many recipes and ideas that I can hardly process all the information.  My "pancakes and pajamas" party theme comes from Pinterest, and it was a huge hit with the kids and grown ups.

Soren was pretty excited to wear her new robe for her party.  I took a photo of Soren and her bestie since birth, Reese:

Here is me with my bestie...Reese's mama!  How cool that our daughters get to grow up together!!

We didn't have a normal birthday cake, of course.  We had pancakes!!  With candles!!

The girls decorated pillow cases to take home.

They also got their fingernails painted.

Look at the proud parents:

And here are just a few more photos from the party.  It was so great!!  We are so grateful Soren has such a lovely group of friends.

Happy Birthday, Boobie!

Flour Tortillas

When I tell people I make tortillas from scratch the response I get is usually either, "Aren't they like $2 at the store?" or "Gee, I wish I had time for that."  Both points are valid, but once you eat homemade tortillas you will understand my madness.  Seriously.  Consider it a challenge.

First, this is the recipe I use.  Really, this dough can make any flatbread in general, like naan.  Here's what you need to make tortillas: flour, salt, water, baking powder, and fat.  I use organic shortening, but I hear lard is the best fat to use.

Oh, you'll also need an apron if you're like me and make a huge mess.  This one is my favorite.  A stand mixer is also helpful, but hands will work fine, as well.

First, mix the flour, salt, and fat either in a mixer or by hand until it looks like coarse crumbs.  Side note: the recipe calls for only 2 tablespoons of fat.  I add one more after reading lots of recipe reviews.

Next, dump in water and knead by hand or with a dough hook.  The dough should be soft but not sticky.

At this point, you can cover the dough and leave it alone for however long, even a few hours.  It won't hurt it to sit if you need it to.  Cut the dough into even (or sort of even) pieces.  I find a bench scraper particularly helpful with this step.

Make sure to cover the pieces you aren't working with, or they will dry out.  I use a folded piece of foil, but a towel would work.

Roll each chunk of dough into a flat shape; maybe your tortilla will be round or maybe it will be more square.  Perfection isn't important.  No matter what your tortilla looks like it will taste delicious.

Cook each tortilla in a hot pan, preferably cast iron.  I set my burner to medium heat, but my stove isn't the greatest.   It heats very uneven and is unpredictable. You want the pan hot enough to get the tortilla lightly brown after about a minute, not burnt.  You will see little bubbles on the tortilla as it cooks.  When the first side has browned a little, flip the tortilla.  Do NOT cook the tortilla too long or it will be dry.

Keep the tortillas covered as you cook all the dough or they will dry out.

This whole process from mixing to cooking all the tortillas will take about an hour if you make all 24 tortillas (why wouldn't you??).  Yes, you can buy tortillas for $2 at the store.  A few weeks ago I decided to buy a bag of tortillas because I was in a hurry.  Guess what?  None of my family would eat them.  They all complained about how gross the quesadillas were and asked me why they tasted so bad.  I've ruined my children.

Let me know how your tortilla adventure goes!

Fall Garden Update

The garden has been cleared out, and the chickens are hard at work scratching around in the new, wide open space.  While I enjoy having a summer garden, I get somewhat tired of peeling and freezing tomatoes.  I will appreciate all of summer's hard work this Autumn as I make pizza sauce and salsa with our garden tomatoes.  We may even have enough to last into the new year depending on how much pizza my kiddos eat (probably a lot).

So, while the garden may look barren, the chickens see it as a wonderland of scratching and dust bathing.

Speaking of chickens, four new baby hens are set to arrive next week.  Yay!!

Since the weather has turned a bit colder, Mo decided to make a bed on our pile of grass compost.  I guess it's putting off enough heat to keep an old dog warm.

I guess we'd better get her winter quarters set up since she refuses to come inside.

Crafting With Cats

In preparation for Soren's birthday party, I spent part of the day making tags for the treat sacks.  This year, party goers will get to take home some homemade chocolate syrup and some paper straws.

I dusted off the Cricket machine, dug out some paper, and got to work creating tags.  "Lucky" for me I had some helpers.

It started off innocent enough, with just a look from afar:

Then, they crept a little closer:

Maybe just a little nap on the paper...

And then the paper chewing began:

We mustn't forget hide and seek:

Good thing for me I never have to craft alone.

I am Still Alive!

I realized I haven't blogged since July, and I didn't think anyone really noticed until my mother in law mentioned it the other day.  So, I guess I should get back to it.  The main reason my blogging has slowed down is that our laptop is a piece of junk and our PC is even worse.  I use the iPad for our day-to-day Internet needs, but it isn't great for uploading photos.  Me and the trusty old Mac laptop are back at it this evening, uploading photos at a snail's pace.  It means I get to sit in one place for an hour or so, and that's surely not a bad thing.

So, the Summer flew by so very quickly.  As much as I complained about all four kids being home, the quick passage of time is not my friend.  Evelyn turned 8.  Dade turned 15.  Adventures in driving lessons to commence shortly. Soren turned 6.  Perhaps most amazing is that Colby turned 36. Yes, he is now closer to 40 than to 30, and I am always quick to remind him that he is a full 1 1/2 years older than me.  I have been teaching tons of yoga, including a free class I started for my friends (which I call Friendsies Yoga).  Who would have thought that I would be teaching yoga?!

We didn't, unfortunately, take any vacations this summer.  We spent a lot of time working in the garden and managing the chicken coop.  Our hens are so amazing.  We love them so much!  We have four more chickens scheduled to be delivered next week.  I can't wait to meet them, and I will post photos as soon as the babies arrive.

Soren played soccer.  Brody played football.  Colby coached both. Early Fall is all about marching band for Dade.  Brody and Evelyn are both in the school choir, and Brody is the lone 5th grade viola player in the orchestra.  Both girls are still in Girl Scouts, and I am still leading the two troops.  Soren experienced her first Girl Scout overnight camp.  It was fun despite the rain and chill.

Four of my favorite little ladies

You'd be smiling, too, if these girls were in the van with you!

One of my favorite things about Girl Scouts is the amazing women I've met.

It was a rainy and chilly day at the orchard.

Evelyn celebrated her 8th birthday with a puppy party.  We made pet rocks, ate cake, and played games.

Everyone got her photo taken in the dog house.

Soren celebrated her 6th birthday, but her big party isn't until Saturday.  We are having a pancakes and pajamas party, and I can't wait!!  Here are a few photos from her birthday day:

This is the photo the kids wanted to take. I love them!
I think that pretty much catches y'all up on the Vescapades life.  I will posting some favorite recipes and summer reads soon.  And, of course, lots more photos of my crazy clan.  Look out, world.  I'm back.
